November: Time Disappears
Down to the wire once again, but this one is actually finished at the wire. I started it on Wednesday. I went to my trusty binder of potential lyrics and found several that I thought I might use. Chose some lyrics that were rather odd, rather philosophical, and which I have no memory of writing.
I worked it quite quickly into four verses, and then wrote a short chorus to be the unifying theme. Strange, it's the third song that I've written within the last year that uses "on and on" as lyrics. Does this have any deep significance? Ultimately, this song seems like it's about death, sort of. Well, winter is coming, as is the winter of my life. I certainly didn't sit down and say, hmmm, I think I'll write a song about death. Strange how these things come from the subconscious mind and manifest as something that needed to be said.
I started off on piano, but switched to guitar, which suited the plaintive feeling I was looking for. A new key for me, E minor, but playable on the guitar. Fingerpicking style.
Time Disappears
Restless sound of the ticking clock
Nowhere safe, it never stops.
Mark the passing of the hour
Cannot hide, no ivory tower.
On and on and on, time disappears.
On and on, the last frontier.
Darkness comes as sunlight dies
Stars streak round the heavenly skies
Oceans roll, tides rise and fall
Cycles swirling round us all.
On and on and on, time disappears.
On and on, the last frontier.
Shivering branches, stark and bare
Greening of the springtime air
Summer's bounty lush with heat
Gently falling autumn leaves.
On and on and on, time disappears.
On and on, the last frontier.
Birth and youth, then growing old
Wisdom guiding, stories told
We are dust made whole again
Calm samsara never ends.
On and on and on, time disappears.
On and on, the last frontier.
